While marijuana concentrates are just recently growing in popularity, some believe concentrates have been around for over 12,000 years. With all that history, we have had plenty of time to discover the different types and how to consume them. We’ve put together a guide to help you find the right concentrate for your needs.
Concentrates or extracts are known by many names like hash, wax, honey oil, dabs, and honestly, the list could go on. Concentrates, while they have several nicknames, are essentially types of cannabis that contain an elevated amount of THC. Several cannabis products fall under this category, and they all have different textures, potency, and ways to consume them.
Several types of concentrates include wax, shatter, kief, live resin, and rosin.
Wax: Wax is a yellow/brown dab, typically smoked in a pipe, and is the stickiest of concentrates.
Shatter: Shatter is a form of butane hash oil and is stable and sticky.
Kief: Kief is also known as cannabis crystals and is a collection of loose trichomes sifted from cannabis flowers.
Live Resin: Live resin is extracted from freshly harvested marijuana plants, then blasted with solvents like butane hash oil.
Rosin: Rosin is extracted from dried buds, trim, or hash.
There are several ways to consume concentrates, the most popular being vaporizers, dabs, and bowl topping. Vaporizers have changed over the years and now most commonly are used in a portable form, known as vape. A basic vape pen will allow you to add concentrate into its chamber. Dabs use a dab rig, ideally made from borosilicate glass. First, you fill the rig with water, place your nail into the rig joint, and add concentrate to the nail. Bowl topping is the most common method and simply involves adding concentrates to the flower. You can also use this method for bongs or when you roll a joint.
Concentrate storage is essential to prolong the longevity of your concentrates. You can use silicone paper, non-stick glass containers, or silicone containers. We recently wrote a cannabis storage guide you can read for in-depth storage methods.
